A hugely exciting release for indie pop fans and classic rock fans alike! Ardent was the legendary Memphis label, best know for unleashing BIG STAR on the world, This killer double set features - in addition to Big Star classics Like 'SEPTEMBER GURLS' - no less than 14 rare or unissued BIG STAR-related cuts, including one completely never before heard outtake from 'Radio City', and a good number of vastly different versions of some familiar tunes, Also includes rare tracks from ALEX CHITON and CHRIS BELL, Chris Bell's pre-Big Star outfit Rock City, classic Memphis power pop from the Hot Dogs, Scruffs and Tommy Hoehn, and the incredible long lost early '70s power pop masterpiece 'Feel Alright' by Cargo.
Basically the entire second disc (24 tracks) and about 6 tracks on disc one are BIG STAR-related, while most of the first disc focuses on '60s Memphis garage rock sounds, many featuring the involvement of iconic Memphis figure JIM DICKINSON. "Thank You Friends" benefits from full access to the Ardent tape vault and the sound quality is second to none, The lengthy sleeve notes by Alec Palao draw upon in-depth interviews with both Fry and Ardent associates Jim Dickinson and Terry Manning, It is a unique insight into a chapter of both Memphis and pop music history.
Of course if you don't know who Big Star are this won't mean much, Basically they are second only to the Velvet underground in regards to their influence on contemporary rock/pop-based indie and alternative music, Big Star's influence can be heard in the all of the following, and many more: REM, Teenage Fan Club, Belle & Sebastian, Primal Scream, Ryan Adams,the Replacements, You Am I, Wilco and Tom Petty, They are loved by all rock critics, so expect major music press internationally to go nuts with the unearthing of this material.
