Formed in San Francisco in 2009 by Wooden Shjips guitarist Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada, Moon Duo released two critically acclaimed EPs, Killing Time (2009) and Escape (2010), as well as a full-lengther in 2011, Mazes, Moon Duo create a truly cosmic brand of American rock & roll: they combine the avant-synth sheen of bands like Suicide and Silver Apples with the fuzz of primitive string-bending rock outfits like the Velvet Underground, Crazy Horse and the 13th Floor Elevators, Along with their more famous brothers in Wooden Shjips, Moon Duo are masters of thee almighty drone, yet they combine this guitar overload with a real pop sensibility, meaning they will also greatly appeal to fans of Spacemen 3, Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab, etc, Both Moon Duo and the Wooden Shjips have successfully toured Australia several times and enjoy a wide and dedicated following amongst the independent music sector, Circles is the product of a long winter's isolation in the Rocky Mountains; this groundwork was then taken to a small apartment in San Francisco for an additional recording session with engineer Phil Manley (of the band Trans Am), Circles is a truly cosmic listen, but Johnson and Yamada also know how to keep it tight and always listenable: it is 21st-century psychedelia par excellence.
