VISIONARY, POET, MUSICIAN, SINGER-SONGWRITER GIL SCOTT-HERON'S THE BOTTLE WILL BE
RELEASED AS A SINGLE ON LIMITED EDITION GREEN VINYL
When Gil Scott-Heron emerged in the early seventies his unique brand of hard-talking street poetry, combined with jazzinfluenced
soul and funk arrangements, paved the way for the hip-hop and rap explosion.
Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune described Scott-Heron's collaborative work with Brian Jackson as "Together they
crafted jazz-influenced soul and funk that brought new depth and political consciousness to '70s music alongside Marvin
Gaye and Stevie Wonder." The Bottle has been described by the BBC as ".one of the most exuberant catalogues of
ghetto alcoholism ever committed to tape." Much loved and a favourite of music lovers and musicians alike, 'The Bottle'
has been covered by artists as diverse as Joe Bataan and Paul Weller.
A cult hit in America when originally released in 1974, it reached no.15 in the US R&B chart and features a memorable
flute performance by creative foil Brian Jackson. It was the only single from Winter in America (SNAF833CD), Gil ScottHeron's
and Brian Jackson's critically acclaimed album; his fourth and probably his most complete album, it captures
Scott-Heron at a turning point, largely leaving his heavier raps behind in favour of a floating ambience, his poetry
illuminated by Jackson's superb instrumentation.
The B-side, 'Your Daddy Loves You', has a sweet and personal touch with poignant lyrics and superb playing and
serves as a reminder that not all revolutionaries could be on the frontline permanently.
In response to Scott-Heron's death in 2011, Public Enemy's Chuck D commented: "RIP GSH...and we do what we do
and how we do because of you".
Usher: "I just learned of the loss of a very important poet...R.I.P., Gil Scott-Heron. The revolution will be live!!"
Eminem: "He influenced all of hip-hop".
Charly release The Bottle as a 7-inch single on limited edition green vinyl as part of their newly launched Signature
Sevens vinyl series.
