In his 1971 hit American Pie, Don McLean referred to the death of Buddy Holly in 1959 as "the day the music died". It was a
memorable phrase that has passed into the language, but it wasn't quite true.. Although Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the
Big Bopper all lost their lives in a plane crash on 3 February 1959, their music emphatically lives on.
