Jonny Kosmo is the project of LA-based multi-instrumentalist, lyricist and producer who
creates feel-good, funked-out pop inspired by the likes of Outkast, TLC and Harumi Hosono.
Featuring singles ‘Fool’, ‘Last Call’ and ‘Firefly’, which saw praise and plays from the likes of
Rage, triple j, MILKY and The Deli Magazine, plus adds to a string of influential Apple Music
and Spotify editorial playlists, Pastry touches on themes of community, spiritual
metamorphosis and inherent resiliency of spirit. These are spring-boarded by the record's
construction itself; songs created from samples of others, continually folding in on itself.
Focus track ‘How High’ is the album’s heart and centre. Opening with chirping flute, upbeat
drums and electric guitar, Kosmo cites the meditative groove as a song about 'pure spirit
and bringing love to everything you do'. While Kosmo takes lead on vocals for the majority
of Pastry, ‘How High’ features Kosmo’s partner Gracie on vocals, backed up by Los Angeles’
group, The Spencer Gospel Singers who have been performing together since the ‘70s.
Alongside the release of Pastry comes an animated video from Northeast Los Angeles
muralist Rodolfo Kardona, who also created the album’s artwork, plus a drop of Pastrythemed
merch, available exclusively via Kosmo’s website.
Pastry was recorded and mixed at Kosmo’s home studio Slimehouse as well as Record
Studio 22 with Tomas Dolas (The Oh Sees/Mr. Elevator) and mastered by Alex Cooley, with
all of the album’s artwork created by local Northeast Los Angeles muralist Rodolfo Kardona
in celebration of community essence.
Pastry is the follow-up to Kosmo’s debut, self-titled album (2019), which saw praise from
Spotify’s editorial teams and support slots alongside Gary Wilson, Jerry Paper and Reggie
Watts, with live performances characterised by community stage presence, brass sections,
melting harmony and occasional trampolines.
