Yes, at the end of the 1970s, the times they were a-changing - but the for some, the more they changed, the more they stayed the same, too. Like John Renbourn, a picker who'd come thru the 60s folk-rock boom with Bert Jansch and Pentangle, then carried on through the roots-rich '70s with solo records and The John Renbourn Group - for him, 1978 simply meant more music; in the studio and in concert around the world, playing his unique blend of traditional songs, early music and blues, all knowingly phrased with pan-Asian intonation. This concert is from the collection of a Japanese promoter, who'd taped the shows he'd booked over the years, leaving behind a sizeable trove when he passed a few years back. This was not simply another night of playing; the crowd assembled to hear Renbourn listened with mounting excitement and admiration, and a special time was had by all. Now it's our turn to freak - Live In Kyoto 1978 is a sweet archival addition to the discography of the late, great John Renbourn.
